Abuse and systemic failures at Ontario provincial youth institutions from 1953 to 1984.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has approved a $60-million class action settlement for thousands of children who were abused at provincial youth institutions between January 1, 1953, and April 2, 1984. The settlement addresses allegations of systemic failures in the management and operation of these schools, including inadequate staff training and lack of accountability. Individual compensation ranges from $5,000 to $100,000, with a simplified process for claims. An additional $1,500 is available for counselling costs related to the claims process. The court found the settlement to be fair, reasonable, and in the best interests of class members.

You may be eligible if you:

• All persons who resided at any of thirteen provincial Training Schools between Jan. 1, 1953 and April 2, 1984.

• Basic contact information
• 15 months
• Proof of purchase or supporting documents

If you do not have every document, you may still be able to file. Many settlements accept claims without receipts.

• Complete a form confirming harm and identifying the school attended for $5,000 compensation (Track 1).
• Submit a witnessed declaration for higher compensation amounts based on the nature and severity of harm (Track 2).
• Claims must be filed within 15 months.
