About this settlement

Allegations of non-consensual MRI scans performed on members of the Pictou Landing First Nation.

A tentative settlement has been reached in a class-action lawsuit alleging members of the Pictou Landing First Nation in Nova Scotia underwent MRI scans without their knowledge or consent. The lawsuit, filed in 2020 and certified in 2024, alleged two Halifax doctors took additional 'secret' scans of about 60 band members for a separate study, constituting invasion of privacy, recklessness, negligence, unlawful imprisonment, and assault and battery. The proposed $400,000 settlement is subject to approval by the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for November 13.
