Manitoba First Nations lawyer Joan Jack has won her lawsuit against the law firm Gowling WLG, which represented survivors of federal Indian day schools. Jack alleged she was not compensated for years of her work on the class-action case, which resulted in a $1.47-billion settlement in 2019. The Court of King's Bench ruled in her favour, stating that her fees were a binding agreement when the file was transferred to Gowling. The damages due from Gowling will be determined at a subsequent hearing. Jack filed the original statement of claim for the day school lawsuit in 2009, and Gowling WLG took over the case in 2016.
