An authorized Quebec class action brought by Option consommateurs alleges Home Depot sent customers' email addresses and purchase details to Meta for targeted Facebook advertising without consent.
Allegations that Home Depot shared Quebec customers' email addresses and purchase details with Meta for targeted advertising without consent.
Option consommateurs filed an application to bring a class action against Home Depot in the Superior Court of Quebec on January 27, 2023, alleging that the retailer transmitted customers' email addresses, purchase amounts and the types of goods bought to Meta, which used the data to run and measure targeted advertising on Facebook. Home Depot confirmed the sharing to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, which ruled in 2023 that the company had failed to obtain valid consent, and it stopped the practice in 2022. The Superior Court authorized the action in 2024 for in-store purchases only. On February 13, 2026 the Quebec Court of Appeal widened the group to include customers who shopped on Homedepot.ca, and the case is now proceeding to the merits. Unless the parties settle, a trial will decide the value of the information shared with Meta. Members are included automatically and do not need to register. No settlement has been reached and there is no claim process yet.
