About this settlement

Compensation for First Nations children who were removed from their families into the child welfare system, and for those harmed by the underfunding of First Nations child and family services and by Jordan's Principle.

This $23.34 billion settlement — the largest in Canadian history — compensates First Nations children who were removed from their families into the on-reserve child welfare system, and those affected by the chronic underfunding of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program and by Jordan's Principle. The Federal Court approved the first claims process, which opened on March 10, 2025 for the Removed Child Class and the Removed Child Family Class. Removed Child Class members are eligible for $40,000 in base compensation, and some caregiving parents and grandparents for up to $80,000. Claimants who were over the age of majority when the claims period opened have until March 10, 2028 to submit a claim.
