Allegations that Amazon excluded certain Washington, D.C. ZIP codes from expedited Prime delivery services while charging full membership fees.
Amazon has agreed to pay $8.25 million to resolve allegations that it secretly excluded customers in two Washington, D.C., ZIP codes (20019 and 20020) from certain expedited Amazon Prime delivery services while continuing to charge them the full Prime membership price. Approximately $7.25 million will be distributed to eligible customers, and $1 million will be paid to the District of Columbia. The lawsuit alleged that Amazon excluded these areas from its in-house delivery network for purported safety reasons, relying instead on third-party carriers that resulted in slower delivery times for about 69,000 customers. As part of the settlement, Amazon will also notify customers and the D.C. attorney general if similar delivery exclusions are imposed in the future.
