A Federal Court ruling determined Air Canada's liability was capped at approximately C$18,500 (9,988 Special Drawing Rights) under the Montreal Convention, as Brink's did not declare a higher value for the shipment. This ruling sets a precedent that airlines' liability for lost or damaged cargo and baggage is limited by international treaty unless an excess value is declared and paid for.
